I am taking a stand against childhood cancer by joining more than 90,000 Mini-THON® students who are fundraising for Four Diamonds.
I am a childhood cancer survivor thanks to the support from people like you. At my 2 year old well baby visit a large mass was discovered in my abdomen. Unfortunately, there were more tumors. I had cancer in both kidneys and lungs. The diagnosis was bilateral Wilms' Tumors with metastasis to the lungs (stage 4). After a year of chemotherapy, three kidney operations, surgical biopsies and a central line to my heart, I was cured. Thankfully, research saved my life. This type of cancer was well studied and the established protocols worked for me. However, every child responds differently and not all outcomes are positive. I have two partial kidneys but no disabilities except for some large scars and a fear of needles. I am part of a survivorship program. I have been monitored by pediatric oncology for 14 years because of the possible side effects from chemotherapy such as hearing loss, heart damage, and leukemia.
In the U.S., more children die from cancer than any other disease, but Four Diamonds is working to change this reality. With the help of people like you, Four Diamonds supports more than 80 pediatric oncology research professionals who are learning more about how cancer forms, how it can be treated and how treatments can be more effective. This life-saving research will benefit children around the world. For more information, visit www.FourDiamonds.org.
